Juror Information
The Fort Lupton Municipal Court has a jury trial scheduled for the following date:
No jury trials scheduled at this time
The jury system is a very important part of the court process in Colorado. The opportunity to serve on a jury allows you to become better informed about your courts and the law. Citizens who serve as jurors usually feel a sense of pride and respect for our system of justice.
Colorado law made jury service more convenient by using a one day/one trial system. This means that in each calendar year, a person who is summoned and appears for service may be released from further service unless that person is assigned to a particular trial. When a juror is assigned to a trial, the length of the jury service will be for the duration of that trial.
You do not need to have knowledge of the law or other special skills. You must use common sense, keep an open mind and be fair, impartial and honest and decide what the facts are by listening carefully to the evidence presented and actively participating in jury deliberations. The judge will explain the laws that control the trial and how jurors apply the laws to the facts in order to reach a decision.
Jurors are selected at random through a computer system. The Municipal Court uses a list of all registered voters from Weld County and city directories from the City of Fort Lupton’s Finance Department. These lists are used to insure a composite cross section of the population of the city.
The legal qualifications for jury service are:
-
You must be a United States Citizen.
-
You must be 18 years of age or older.
-
You must read, speak and understand the English language.
-
You must reside in the City of Fort Lupton.
-
You must not have a physical or mental disability that would affect your ability to serve as a juror. If you do, you may be required to submit a statement from your doctor.
-
You do not have the sole responsibility for the daily care of a permanently disabled person living in the same household, where your juror service would cause substantial risk of injury to the health of the disabled person. If you are, you may be required to submit a statement from the doctor.
-
You have not been selected and served as a juror in any court within the past twelve months.
-
You are not scheduled for juror service during the next twelve months by another court.
If you received a jury summons and do not qualify to serve because of any of the above reasons, you should discuss your situation with the Municipal Court at 720-466-6105. You may be required to provide written proof of disqualification. By law, there are no economic, age-related or occupational exclusions from jury service.
In accordance with Fort Lupton Municipal Code (Section 2-156), the Municipal Court will pay you ten dollars ($10) for appearing on a jury summons and fifteen dollars ($15) per day for serving on a jury. Pursuant to Colorado law (Section 13-71-126 C.R.S.) your employer has a duty to pay regular wages up to $50 per day if you are regularly employed. The employer may pay more than $50 by mutual agreement. In addition, Colorado law protects a juror’s job and prevents employers from threatening, coercing, or discharging an employee for reporting to a jury summons (Section 13-71-134 C.R.S.).
Juror summons and questionnaires are mailed to your residence. The questionnaire is dictated by state statute and the attorneys in the case use the answers you provide to select the final members of the jury panel. If you have not submitted your questionnaire prior to the trial date, please turn it into the Clerk of the Court at the time of check-in.
Failure to respond or appear may result in a Show Cause Order and/or Bench Warrant being issued subjecting you to the imposition of fines and/or jail time.
