Historic Designation

Applying for Historic Designation

Historic preservation benefits both the individual property owner and the community as a whole. The property owner receives a benefit from the pride felt by contributing a historically significant property to the community for preservation. Also, the property owner receives a monetary benefit from the various tax incentives offered by federal, state and local governments. Such tax incentives are commonly in the form of tax credits. For more information on tax credits that may be available, you can visit History Colorado's Preservation Tax Credits page. The community as a whole benefits in the identification and recognition of a historically part of the past. The preservation of this history allows for future generations to remain aware of the community's past identity.

The designation of a structure, site, object or district as historically significant places a certain responsibility upon an applicant. This responsibility relates to the rehabilitation of historically designated properties. Specifically, The Secretary of Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation shall be applied to rehabilitation projects. The City of Fort Lupton will work with applicants to ensure these standards are applied to specific historic preservation projects in a reasonable manner, taking into consideration economic and technical feasibility.

Chapter 18, Article XVII of the Fort Lupton Municipal Code (PDF) addresses the standards and process for historic designation. The forms that you will need to complete in order to apply for historic designation with the City of Fort Lupton are available here:
